Virgin River · A Viewer’s Companion
A town this small should be easy to follow — except the doctor and the mayor forgot to mention they were married, half the bar staff served in the same Marine unit, and at least two babies arrive with the wrong name attached. This chart sorts the town by colour: river teal is Mel’s family, the one she came north to get away from and ended up looking for; cedar is the Sheridans, Jack’s enormous clan; lantern gold is Doc and Hope’s household, which keeps quietly acquiring people; and moss green is the bar — the old unit, the kitchen and the bakery van.
Spoiler-safe mode is on: death markers, secret-reveal labels and finale outcomes are hidden on this chart and in the notes below. Use the “Spoilers” button in the top bar to show everything again.
Virgin River is a soap wearing flannel. Nobody arrives without a second name, a second family, or a story they have not told yet.
Mel Monroe is a Los Angeles nurse practitioner and midwife who answers a newspaper ad for a job in a town she has never heard of. She is a widow — her husband Mark, an ER doctor, died in a car crash — and she arrives carrying more grief than she will admit for two seasons. Hope McCrea hired her. Doc Mullins, who is supposed to be her boss, was not asked and does not want the help.
Jack is the oldest of six: brother Adam died young, and of his four sisters only Brie, an attorney, moves to town — Donna, Mary and Jeannie are names in phone calls. His other family is the Marine unit he brought home with him: Preacher cooks at the bar, Brady was his stray, and Mike became a detective. That is why the bar, the crime plots and the Sheridans are all the same story.
Charmaine, Jack’s casual girlfriend when the show opens, announces at the end of Season 1 that she is pregnant — with twins, and Jack’s. Jack builds his whole life around that. At the end of Season 4 she admits Jack is not the father at all; in Season 5 she names Calvin, the pot-farm boss, from one night. She marries and is left by Todd Masry, has the boys on Christmas Eve in Season 5, and then fights Calvin for custody — a fight that is still unfinished when the Season 6 finale finds her front door open.
Cleaning her house in Season 5, Joey finds a bundle of love letters written to their mother, Sarah, by a man who is not the father who raised them. The trail runs through a postmaster, a Santa Claus in Clear River and the 1976 Lumberjack Games to Everett Reid — a songwriter living outside Virgin River all along. He arrives in the Season 5 finale, tells Mel the truth in Season 6, and it turns out Doc has known him, and resented him, for decades.
At the end of Season 3 a young man checks into the B&B and says he is looking for his grandfather. Denny is the son of Ryan Cutler, the child Rose never told Doc she had. He moves in with Doc and Hope, falls for Lizzie — Connie’s niece, sent to town in disgrace, later Hope’s chief of staff — and is living with a Huntington’s diagnosis of his own. By the end of Season 6 they are expecting a daughter, Kumiko, named for Denny’s mother.
“Paige Lassiter,” who runs the bakery van, is really Michelle Logan, hiding from an abusive ex-husband, Wes — a detective with friends in a DA’s office. When Wes tracks her down and she pushes him down the stairs, Preacher tells her to run with her son and buries the body himself. That decision drags in Wes’s twin, Vince, the kidnapping of Christopher, and finally a Season 6 murder trial with Brie for the defence.
The town recycles names, nicknames and initials with real commitment. Here is how to keep them apart:
All one man. Doc is what the town calls him, Vernon is what Hope and Mel call him, Mullins is on the shingle. Same grumpy physician, three registers of affection.
Also one man, and no clergy involved — “Preacher” is his Marine nickname. John Middleton is the name on the court documents, which is why it appears out of nowhere the moment lawyers get involved.
The Logan twins. Wes is Paige’s ex-husband; Vince is the brother who comes looking for him. Confusingly, Steve Bacic plays Vince and took over as Wes in Season 2 after Michael Shanks played him in Season 1.
Mark Monroe is Mel’s late husband, seen only in flashback. Mike Valenzuela is the detective who served with Jack, comes to town to help him take on Calvin, and ends up with Brie.
Brie is Jack’s sister. Brady is Jack’s former Marine, former employee and long-running headache — and the man Brie keeps going back to, which is precisely the problem.
Three L-names, three households. Lizzie is Connie’s niece. Lydie is Ricky’s grandmother. Lilly Anderson owned the farm, and the newborn left on the clinic doorstep in the pilot is hers.
Chloe Anderson is Lilly’s baby, left on the clinic doorstep in the pilot and named by Mel after her own sister Chloe, who died in childhood. That loss is also what sent Mel’s mother back to Everett in the first place.
Mel collects surnames. Jensen is her mother’s married name and the family she grew up in; Monroe came from Mark. By the end of Season 6 she is a Sheridan.

Retired actress, sewing-circle grandee, town council vote — and the one member of Hope’s circle who once set her cap at Doc.

General store, bakery, and the sharpest pair of eyes in Virgin River. Lizzie is sent to live with her; she also becomes Preacher’s alibi and co-parent.

The second doctor, brought into the clinic in Season 4 — a city physician whose father knew Doc at medical school, and who does not always agree with him.

Lydie’s grandson, raised behind the bar by Jack and Preacher, and Lizzie’s first boyfriend — until he enlists in the Marines.

The widow on the farm whose newborn opens the series on the clinic doorstep. Pancreatic cancer takes her in Season 3, and Hope crashes her car racing home for the funeral.
Chart covers Seasons 1–6 (2019–2024), through the Season 6 finale “The Big Day” — spoilers run to there. Season 7 arrived on Netflix on 12 March 2026; its ten episodes have not been written up on the Virgin River wiki yet, so nothing from that season is charted or spoiled here. Season-specific facts — the paternity of the twins, the Everett Reid reveal, Denny’s parentage, Hope’s accident and Preacher’s trial — were checked against that wiki rather than from memory. Portraits are stills from the same wiki, cropped and served from this site.
