One backyard in Berkeley. Four grown kids, nine grandkids — here's whose child is whose.
Parenthood drops you into four households at once — all orbiting Zeek and Camille's dinner table — and everyone talks over each other, so it takes half a season to sort the cousins from the siblings. This chart untangles it: green is the grandparents, amber is Braverman blood (born or adopted — this family doesn't distinguish), and denim is everyone who married in. Each column is one household.
Why it's confusing — and the four things that untangle it
There's no villain and no war here. The confusion is pure logistics: four overlapping households, three surnames, and two people named Zeek.
Four households, one backyard
Every storyline routes through Zeek and Camille's house — the huge dinners, the baseball games, the driveway arguments. When you can't tell which family a scene belongs to, check the parents: Adam (the responsible one), Sarah (the broke one), Crosby (the reckless one), Julia (the lawyer). Every kid on the chart belongs to exactly one of those four columns.
Victor becomes a Braverman
Julia and Joel plan on a second baby and instead foster Victor, a nine-year-old with a hard past (S3). The adoption is finalized in Season 4 — the courtroom scene where the whole clan shows up — and the strain of it feeds into Julia and Joel's separation. On this chart he's amber, not denim: the show never treats him as anything less than blood.
Max's diagnosis drives the show
Max is diagnosed with Asperger's in the very first episodes, and Adam and Kristina's entire arc grows from it — fighting schools, hiring aides, and finally founding Chambers Academy in Season 6 so Max (and kids like him) have somewhere to belong. His graduation speech is one of the series' peaks.
Amber names her baby Zeek
Amber gets pregnant by her ex-fiancé Ryan York, the Afghanistan veteran she almost married in Season 5. She raises the baby on her own, and he's born in the final episodes — just as grandpa Zeek's heart is failing. She hands the old man his namesake: little Zeek. That's why the finale wrecks everyone.
Seth vs. Mark vs. Hank
Sarah's three men, in order: Seth Holt — the ex-husband, a musician who drifts back in Seasons 2–3 and is Amber and Drew's actual dad. Mark Cyr — the young English teacher she nearly marries (S3–4). Hank Rizzoli — the gruff photographer (Ray Romano) she works for, falls for, and finally marries in the finale. Only Seth is on the tree; the other two never had kids with her.
The name decoder
Nine grandkids, three surnames, and a family that reuses its patriarch's name. Keep these apart:
Zeek vs. Zeek
Zeek Braverman = grandpa, Craig T. Nelson, dies in the finale. Zeek York = Amber's newborn son, named in his honor, arrives in the same episode. One tree, one name, opposite ends.
Haddie vs. Amber vs. Sydney
The three granddaughters. Haddie = Adam & Kristina's — leaves for Cornell. Amber = Sarah's — stays, struggles, becomes a mom. Sydney = Julia & Joel's — the youngest, still in grade school.
Max vs. Jabbar vs. Victor
The grandsons people mix up. Max = Adam's son, the Asperger's storyline. Jabbar = Crosby & Jasmine's son. Victor = Julia & Joel's adopted son. Different households, different columns.
Joel vs. Hank vs. Seth
Joel = Julia's husband, the contractor — married in from day one. Hank = Sarah's boss-turned-husband. Seth = Sarah's ex-husband and her kids' father. Only Joel is a Graham.
Drew vs. Max
The two quiet teenage boys. Drew = Sarah's son (Holt), soft-spoken and sweet, ends up at Berkeley. Max = Adam's son (Braverman), blunt and literal. Cousins, not brothers.
Nora vs. Aida vs. baby Zeek
The three series-born babies. Nora = Adam & Kristina's (S3). Aida = Crosby & Jasmine's (S5). Zeek York = Amber's (finale). If someone's holding an infant, it's one of these three.
Braverman vs. Holt vs. Graham
The surnames decode the household instantly. Braverman = Zeek's line (Adam's and Crosby's kids). Holt = Sarah's kids — they carry their dad Seth's name. Graham = Julia's kids, under Joel's name.
Not family — but always in the frame
Hank Rizzoli
Gruff photographer who hires Sarah in Season 4 — and marries her in the finale. His bond with Max, and realizing he may share Max's wiring, is a series highlight.
Ryan York
Afghanistan veteran Zeek takes under his wing. Amber's fiancé in Season 5 — the wedding never happens, but their son, little Zeek, arrives in the finale.
Mark Cyr
The earnest young English teacher — Amber and Drew's teacher, awkwardly — who dates and nearly marries Sarah before Hank enters the picture.
Gwen Chambers
Kristina's friend from chemotherapy in Season 4. Her bequest funds the school Adam and Kristina open — that's why it's called Chambers Academy. †
