Brothers & Sisters · A Viewer's Companion
The Walkers of Pasadena look like one big sun-dappled California family — until William Walker's funeral, when a mistress, a missing fortune and a possible extra sibling surface all at once. This chart keeps the two families straight: vineyard green is the Walkers, wine red is the Harper branch — the other family — and dusk amber marks everyone who married in. The dashed lines are the affairs and contested paternity claims the whole show runs on.
Spoiler-safe mode is on: death markers, secret-reveal labels and finale outcomes are hidden on this chart and in the notes below. Use the “Spoilers” button in the top bar to show everything again.
The show's whole engine is who counts as family. These are the four facts that keep bending the tree.
William Walker — founder of Ojai Foods, father of five — dies in the very first episode, and his funeral starts the show. Within weeks the family learns he kept Holly Harper as a mistress for two decades, quietly moved company money into a secret account whose password ends with an extra initial — R — and left the business, and the family, to sort out what was real.
Holly's daughter Rebecca is introduced to the Walkers as William's child — an instant sixth sibling nobody asked for. Then Season 2 un-rings the bell: a DNA test proves her father is actually David Caplan, Holly's old boyfriend. And just as the dust settles, Season 3 delivers Ryan Lafferty — the secret son William really did have. Keep an eye on the dashed lines; not all of them are true.
Birth order, once and for all: Sarah (business), Kitty (politics), Tommy (the vineyard), Kevin (the law) and Justin (the Army). Sarah and Tommy fight over Ojai Foods, Kitty argues with everyone on principle, Kevin writes the contracts, and Justin gets patched up and shipped out. Every episode is some subset of these five on the phone with Nora.
The show's boldest swerve: once the DNA test clears the way, Justin and Rebecca — who met believing they were half-siblings — fall in love, marry in Season 4, and divorce in Season 5 after Holly's accident and Justin's redeployment. The gold tie between the green side and the wine side of this chart is the strangest line on the whole site.
Season 5 saves the biggest one for the eldest: Nick Brody, Nora's old flame, turns out to be Sarah's biological father — Brody hid the blood-test result decades earlier. After forty years as William's firstborn, Sarah walks down the aisle at the series-finale wedding on Brody's arm.
Three W-surnames, two Williams, two senators and a company that keeps changing hands. Keep these apart:
Three different W-families. Walker = the core clan. Whedon = Joe, Sarah's husband, and their kids Paige and Cooper. Wandell = Scotty, Kevin's husband. Yes, "Walker-Wandell" eventually becomes a hyphenated household of its own.
Oldest to youngest: Sarah, Kitty, Tommy, Kevin, Justin — the S-K-T-K-J you need to keep the five straight. Sarah runs things, Kitty debates things, Tommy grows things, Kevin litigates things, Justin survives things.
William Walker is the patriarch who dies in the pilot. William Walker II is Tommy and Julia's infant son, named for him — born a twin, and lost shortly after birth; his sister Elizabeth is the twin who survives.
The two women in William's life. Nora got the marriage, the house and the five kids; Holly got twenty years of Tuesdays, and, via William's will, a stake in the family company — which is why the Walkers can never simply be rid of her.
Brothers, both dating Walkers. Robert is the senator who marries Kitty. Jason is his minister brother, who dates Kevin in the early seasons — meaning two McCallister brothers courted two Walker siblings at the same time.
Ojai Foods is the family produce company William built and Sarah runs. Walker's Landing is the vineyard Tommy founds — with Holly's money. When the two merge, it's Holly who ends up CEO of the lot.
The series is bookended by them. Season 2: Rebecca is not William's daughter after all — she's David Caplan's. Season 5: Sarah is not William's daughter either — she's Nick Brody's. The only secret child who really was William's is Ryan.
Saul Holden is Nora's older brother — Ojai's bookkeeper and the family's gentle fixer, who spent decades keeping William's secrets. In Season 2 he finally tells one of his own, coming out in his sixties — and the show, kindly, gives him a love story and a restaurant with Scotty.
Scope: the complete series — all five seasons, 2006–2011, spoilers through the series finale. Relationships and reveals verified against the Brothers & Sisters wiki rather than memory. Portraits are cropped stills self-hosted from that wiki; where it has no usable photo (Luc, Joe, Nick Brody, David Caplan and the youngest grandchildren), an initials monogram stands in.
