Two mothers with one face, three hidden children, and an “A” inside the family. Here’s the whole knot, untied.
Rosewood’s real mystery was never the texts — it was the DiLaurentis–Drake–Hastings family tree, which the show rewrote with a new secret sibling almost every season. This chart holds the final version: red borders are DiLaurentis–Drake blood, blue are the Hastings, and pink are the Liars and the people they love. Dashed red lines are the parentage secrets; double red lines join the identical twins — all three pairs of them.
Why it’s confusing: the tree was the mystery
Every “A” reveal in the series turned out to be a relative. These five cards are the whole conspiracy.
Jessica and Mary share one face
Andrea Parker plays both. Jessica DiLaurentis raised the family in Rosewood while her identical twin Mary Drake spent decades locked in Radley Sanitarium, blamed for a babysitting death — and erased from family history. Mary's three children were all taken from her at birth. In Season 7 she confesses she murdered Jessica. If a “dead” character walked past a window, it was usually the other twin.
Charles → CeCe → Charlotte
Mary’s firstborn, Charles, was adopted by Jessica and Kenneth and raised as Alison’s big brother — then sent to Radley as a child. There she transitioned and became Charlotte, returned to Rosewood as glamorous “CeCe Drake,” and secretly ran the A game as Big A. The night she was finally released from care, she was killed at the church bell tower — the murder that drives the final season.
How Spencer got two mothers
Mary, posing as her twin Jessica, spent one night with Peter Hastings — the same man who had already fathered Jason with the real Jessica. Mary bore twins in Radley: Spencer, handed to Peter and Veronica to raise, and Alex, sold abroad. So Spencer and Jason are half-siblings twice over, and the Liars’ great enemy Charlotte was Spencer’s half-sister all along.
Alex Drake, the evil British twin
Spencer’s identical twin was sold at birth and grew up in England — a bartender who learned the truth from Wren and grew close to Charlotte. After Charlotte’s murder, Alex became “A.D.” to hunt the killer, then decided she’d rather just become Spencer. She’s unmasked in the finale and ends up in Mona’s private Paris “dollhouse,” along with Mary.
Three villains, one letter
Mona was the original A, running the game alone until her unmasking in Season 2. Charlotte took the game from Mona inside Radley and ran it as Big A until the “Game Over, Charles” reveal in Season 6. After Charlotte was murdered, Alex Drake picked up the phone as A.D. — every A was family, or became it.
The name decoder
One actress per twin pair, one villain per alias, and far too many Drakes. Keep these straight:
Jessica vs. Mary Drake
Same face (Andrea Parker), opposite lives. Jessica = pearls, garden, buried Alison; dead by Season 4. Mary = the Radley twin in the dark coat, alive to the end. From Season 6B on, assume it’s Mary.
Spencer vs. Alex
Both Troian Bellisario. Alex has blunt bangs, a London accent she keeps slipping into, and no memory of Rosewood small talk. If “Spencer” is oddly cruel, oddly flirty with Toby, or asks a question she should know the answer to — it’s Alex.
Charles / Charlotte / CeCe
One person, three names: born Charles, transitioned to Charlotte in Radley, lived publicly as “CeCe Drake.” Yes, that means Alison’s stylish friend CeCe was her adoptive sibling — and Big A.
Jason’s two fathers
Kenneth is on the birth certificate and raised him; Peter Hastings is the blood, via an affair with Jessica. Resolved in Season 3: Jason is the Liars’ enemy’s brother and Spencer’s half-brother.
Three “Drakes”
Mary Drake is the real one. Alex Drake inherited the name from her birth mother. “CeCe Drake” was just Charlotte borrowing the family name as an alias, years before anyone knew a Drake existed.
Elliott Rollins vs. Archer Dunhill
Same man. “Dr. Elliott Rollins,” who married Alison, was really British con man Archer Dunhill — Charlotte’s lover and Mary’s accomplice, gaslighting Ali for her money.
Twins × three
The show ran the twin trick three times: Jessica & Mary (the mothers), Spencer & Alex (the finale), and babies Lily & Grace — Emily’s eggs, carried by Alison, donor: Wren.
A vs. Big A vs. A.D.
A = Mona (Seasons 1–2). Big A = Charlotte (through Season 6A). A.D. / “Uber A” = Alex Drake (6B–7). Three different tormentors, one signature.
Not family — but all over the story
Mona Vanderwaal
The original “A” — and, the finale reveals, the one who pushed Charlotte from the bell tower. Ends the series keeping Alex and Mary in her own private dollhouse in Paris.
Wren Kingston †
Melissa’s ex-fiancé and the Liars’ favorite British doctor. Per the finale: donor father of Lily & Grace, Alex’s boyfriend — and her victim. She wears his ashes as a diamond.
Archer Dunhill †
Mary’s accomplice, who courted and married Alison as fake doctor “Elliott Rollins” to steal her inheritance. Hanna ran him down with a car; the cover-up haunts Season 7.
Sara Harvey †
Charlotte’s hired decoy — the “Red Coat” and “Black Widow” the Liars kept chasing instead of the real A. Found dead in a bathtub early in Season 7.
