Charmed · A Viewer's Companion
Everything in Charmed is inherited — the manor, the magic, and the maddening habit of P names: Penny, Patty, Prue, Piper, Phoebe. This chart follows the Warren matriline from a Salem witch down to the Halliwell sisters and out through the men who marry in: purple cards are Warren-blood witches, tan cards are the mortals, and blue cards are the magical world — whitelighters and worse — that keeps proposing.
Spoiler-safe mode is on: death markers, secret-reveal labels and finale outcomes are hidden on this chart and in the notes below. Use the “Spoilers” button in the top bar to show everything again.
Eight seasons, one manor, and a family where the grandmother is a ghost, the handyman is an angel and half the wedding guests are demons. Five things to hold onto.
Warren women are witches, the power passes mother to daughter, and every generation names its girls with a P. In 1692 Melinda Warren foretold that her line would one day produce three sisters — the Charmed Ones, the most powerful witches ever. The pilot is that promise coming due, the night the sisters find the Book of Shadows in the attic.
Leo turns up fixing the manor’s plumbing, but he’s really a whitelighter — a guardian angel assigned to protect witches — and falling for your charge is strictly against the rules. His and Piper’s fight with “the Elders” over that rule runs the first three seasons.
Shannen Doherty exits after Season 3: the assassin demon Shax kills Prue in the finale. Instead of recasting the actress, the show recasts the premise — a fourth, unknown sister is found, and the Power of Three is reborn around her.
Paige Matthews is Patty’s daughter by Sam — her own whitelighter — a forbidden affair hidden even from the sisters. Given up at birth to protect her, she walks into Prue’s funeral in the Season 4 premiere: half witch, half whitelighter, and the new youngest sister.
He’s introduced as an assistant D.A. — and, to viewers almost immediately, as Belthazor, a half-demon sent to destroy the sisters. Loving Phoebe keeps flipping him between sides: he becomes the Source of All Evil in Season 4, marries her while secretly wearing that crown, and is vanquished twice — the second time for good in Season 5.
The tightly wound whitelighter who orbs in at the end of Season 5 is really Piper and Leo’s second son, come back from a dark future to stop his brother Wyatt from turning evil. The Elder Gideon kills his adult self in the Season 6 finale — in the same hour baby Chris is born.
One-line answers to the questions every new viewer asks.
Penny is “Grams,” the grandmother who raised the sisters in the manor; Patty is their mother, gone since 1978. Both keep turning up as ghosts.
Melinda Warren is the 1692 ancestress who started the whole line. Melinda Halliwell is Piper and Leo’s daughter, glimpsed in the finale flash-forward.
Leo is Piper’s whitelighter; Cole is Phoebe’s half-demon love; Henry is the mortal parole officer Paige marries in Season 8; Coop is the Cupid Phoebe marries in the finale.
A whitelighter is a witch’s guardian angel; the Elders are their management, Up There; a darklighter is the evil mirror image, with poisoned arrows.
Never on screen together: Prue is the eldest, killed in the Season 3 finale; Paige is the half-sister who takes her place in the Power of Three from Season 4 on.
Wyatt is Piper’s twice-blessed firstborn — and, in the future Chris comes from, the problem. Chris is the second son, who spends Season 6 secretly parenting his own parents.
Both fathered Charmed Ones: Victor, the mortal, is dad to Prue, Piper and Phoebe; Sam, the whitelighter, fathered Paige with Patty in secret.

This chart follows the original Charmed (The WB, 1998–2006) through all eight seasons and the series finale, “Forever Charmed” — spoilers to there, including deaths and the flash-forward ending. Relationships and dates verified against the Charmed Fandom wiki. The 2018–2022 reboot on The CW is a separate continuity with different sisters, and is not charted here.
