Shameless · A Viewer's Companion
The Gallagher house runs on chaos: Frank drinks, Monica vanishes, and Fiona raises her five siblings while neighbors, exes and in-laws wander in and never leave. This chart sorts the crowd: worn brick borders are Gallagher blood, winter grey is the Milkovich clan down the block, and amber is the Alibi Room's found family — the people who are family because they showed up, not because they share a chromosome.
Spoiler-safe mode is on: death markers, secret-reveal labels and finale outcomes are hidden on this chart and in the notes below. Use the “Spoilers” button in the top bar to show everything again.
Shameless has one actual family tree and about four honorary ones. These are the essentials that untangle the crowd in the Gallagher kitchen.
Frank (William H. Macy) spends the family's money at the Alibi and Monica is mostly a rumor — so from the pilot on, it's 21-year-old Fiona feeding, enrolling and bailing out her five younger siblings. When people on this show say “mom,” check who they're looking at.
Season 3 confirms the family's open secret: Ian's biological father is Clayton — Frank's own brother, from a fling with Monica. Same last name either way, which is why nobody's paperwork ever gets fixed. It's the dashed red line on the chart.
Terry Milkovich's house is the block's cautionary tale, but his kids keep falling for Gallaghers: Mandy with Lip, and Mickey with Ian — the show's great love story, all the way to a wedding Terry tries his best to stop.
Kevin Ball and Veronica Fisher live next door, pour the drinks, and co-parent the whole street along with twins Amy and Gemma. They share no DNA with anyone else on this chart — they're simply at every table, every crisis, every scam.
The show's most reliable wrecking ball: Monica reappears every couple of seasons, upends everyone who still hopes, and vanishes. Ian is the child who resembles her most, and her death in Season 7 lands on him hardest.
Frank spends the early seasons living at Sheila Jackson's — whose daughter Karen is tangled up with Lip. Fiona's boyfriend introduces himself as Steve but is really Jimmy, and in Season 4 a grown half-sister, Sammi, turns up with a son of her own.
Half this cast goes by nicknames, aliases or somebody else's name entirely. Keep these apart:
One guy. Justin Chatwin's car thief tells Fiona he's Steve, is really Jimmy Lishman, and runs a third identity, Jack, on the side. The Gallaghers mostly settle on “Jimmy-Steve.”
Lip is short for Phillip — nobody uses the long form except teachers and cops. He's the genius eldest brother, not a second Liam.
Milkovich siblings, both entangled with Gallaghers. Mickey (he, Noel Fisher) is with Ian; Mandy (she) fake-dates Ian as cover, then really dates Lip.
Rhyming Milkovich women, seasons apart. Mandy is Mickey's sister (played by Jane Levy in season 1, Emma Greenwell after). Sandy is their cousin, who arrives in season 10 and dates Debbie.
Daughter and mother, one house, two Gallagher entanglements: Karen with Lip, Sheila (Joan Cusack) with Frank. Karen's arc ends when Mandy runs her down in the Season 3 finale — she leaves changed.
Terry hires her in Season 3 and forces Mickey to marry her; the marriage was never legal. She later runs the Alibi and lands in a throuple — and briefly a marriage — with Kev and V.
Season 4 delivers a grown half-sister: Sammi Slott, Frank's eldest, raised by Queenie — with her son Chuckie in tow. Frank mostly wants her kidney-adjacent loyalty.
The grandkid generation: Franny is Debbie's daughter (born season 6); Fred is Lip and Tami's son (born season 10). Both technically Gallaghers, both raised in the scrum.
Chart covers the US Shameless (Showtime, 2011–2021) through the series finale — spoilers to there, so all eleven seasons are fair game. Season numbers refer to the US run; the UK original is a different family. Portraits are stills from the Shameless wiki, cropped and self-hosted so they load without a round-trip to anyone else's servers.
