Three families went into the lake. One and a half came out.

The Byrdes are easy — it's the Langmore trailer park that sinks people: three near-identical bearded brothers, a niece who's smarter than everyone, and two blond boys whose fathers get mixed up constantly. This chart keeps them straight: storm blue for the Byrdes, muddy gold for the Langmores, dark teal for the Snells — and a baby who is passed across all three columns.

Most Ozark confusion is really just Langmore confusion, plus one baby with no fixed address.

The Langmore brothers, decoded

Three brothers: Cade (in prison when the show opens), Russ, and Boyd. Ruth is Cade's daughter — not Russ's, though Russ half-raised her. Wyatt and Three are Russ's sons, which makes them Ruth's cousins, not her brothers. Ruth kills Russ and Boyd with a rigged dock in Season 1 to protect Marty; her own father Cade is killed at the end of Season 2 on Wendy's order. The curse everyone talks about is real.

The season 3 tragedy

Ben — the brother who couldn't stop talking

Ben Davis is Wendy's younger brother, bipolar and off his medication, and the love of Ruth's life. When he exposes Helen Pierce's secrets to her daughter, he becomes a fatal liability to the cartel — and Wendy gives him up, walking away from a diner while a hitman closes in. It is the show's moral point of no return, the reason Ruth breaks with the Byrdes, and the ghost that haunts Season 4 (his father Nathan arrives asking questions).

The shocker

Wyatt + Darlene: yes, really

Wyatt Langmore — early twenties, sleeping rough after his father's death — drifts onto the Snell farm and into a relationship with Darlene, decades his senior. In Season 4 they marry (the long gold line on the chart), making Darlene briefly a Langmore by marriage. Hours later, Javi Elizondro shoots them both. Ruth's revenge for Wyatt drives the entire final stretch of the series.

The baby

Who ends up with Zeke?

Zeke is born to Pastor Mason Young and his wife Grace — neither of whom survives the Snells. Darlene claims the baby and raises him as a Snell; after she and Wyatt are killed, Ruth takes him in. When Ruth herself is shot in the finale, the show leaves Zeke's future unspoken — with Three the only family left standing. Follow the dashed gold line: it is the saddest relay race on television.

The setup

Why the Byrdes are even here

Marty laundered money in Chicago for the Navarro cartel; when his partner skimmed, Marty talked his way out of execution by promising to wash half a billion dollars in the Missouri Ozarks. Everything else — the casino, the Snell deal, the FBI, the body count — flows from that one desperate pitch. The Byrdes aren't from the lake, and the lake never lets them forget it.

Bearded men in flannel, blond cousins, and a rotating cast of cartel emissaries. Keep these apart:

Cade vs. Russ vs. Boyd

The three Langmore brothers. Cade = Ruth's father, the one in prison until Season 2. Russ = Wyatt and Three's father, the one Ruth electrocutes. Boyd = the one with no kids, who dies on the same dock.

Wyatt vs. Three

Both Russ's sons, both Ruth's cousins. Wyatt = the older, bookish one who should have gone to Mizzou and marries Darlene instead. Three = the younger one who keeps his head down — and survives.

Helen vs. Javi

The cartel's two faces at the lake. Helen Pierce = the icy Chicago lawyer (Seasons 2–3, executed on the tarmac). Javi Elizondro = Navarro's hot-headed nephew (Season 4, shot by Ruth in a Chicago boardroom).

Ben vs. Wyatt

The two doomed young men Ruth loves. Ben = her boyfriend, Wendy's brother, gone in Season 3. Wyatt = her cousin, gone in Season 4. Ruth avenges only one of them.

Frank Sr. vs. Frank Jr.

The Kansas City mob. Frank Cosgrove Sr. = the boss whose union builds the casino. Frank Jr. = the son Ruth throws off a boat and later shoots — before he oddly becomes an ally.

Del vs. Omar Navarro

Del = the cartel emissary of Season 1, shot mid-sentence by Darlene. Omar Navarro = the actual boss, unseen until Season 3, all too present after.

Rachel vs. Maya

The two women on Marty's boats. Rachel Garrison = the Blue Cat Lodge owner from Season 1, back for the finale. Maya Miller = the by-the-book FBI agent stationed on the casino.

Not family — but always in the room
