The Vampire Diaries · A Viewer's Companion
Half of Mystic Falls is secretly related to the other half, one actress plays three different women, and the family tree hides more than one set of real parents. The chart untangles it by bloodline: crimson borders are the vampire lines — the Salvatores, the Petrova doppelgängers, the Originals — lapis blue the human families of the town, and green the witches who keep everyone else alive.
Spoiler-safe mode is on: death markers, secret-reveal labels and finale outcomes are hidden on this chart and in the notes below. Use the “Spoilers” button in the top bar to show everything again.
Every love triangle, blood ritual and midnight funeral traces back to these.
In 1864 the Salvatores were human and the vampire Katherine Pierce courted both of them at once. They died with her blood in their veins, woke up as vampires, and spent the next 145 years blaming each other. When a schoolgirl with Katherine’s exact face appears in Mystic Falls, both brothers fall into orbit all over again — that’s the show.
Nina Dobrev plays Elena (human, kind, straight hair) and Katherine (vampire, weaponized charm, curls) from season one — and from Season 5, Amara, the ancient first owner of the face, while Paul Wesley doubles as Silas, Stefan’s own first edition. The show calls the copies doppelgängers: nature reprinting one face down a bloodline every few centuries.
Grayson and Miranda raised her, but Elena’s biological parents are John Gilbert — the uncle she can’t stand — and Isobel Flemming, Alaric’s presumed-dead wife. The show sits on it until Season 2. It also quietly makes Jeremy her cousin, not her brother, and makes her history teacher very nearly her stepfather.
Sheila “Grams” Bennett taught the craft; Bonnie spends eight seasons paying for everyone else’s rescues with it. Witches are the show’s emergency services — tombs, curses, resurrections — and the finale hangs on one spell: Elena will sleep for exactly as long as Bonnie lives.
In Season 2 the Original family arrives — the first vampires ever made, immune to stakes and manners. Klaus needs the doppelgänger for a curse-breaking ritual; Elijah keeps making elegant deals and regretting them. Their own tangled family untangles on the companion page for The Originals.
The mayor’s family carries a werewolf curse that only wakes when a Lockwood takes a life. Uncle Mason rolls into Season 2 already turned; Tyler is the walking short fuse the show keeps warning you about — he triggers the curse, then becomes Klaus’s first successful hybrid.
The names and faces people actually mix up, in one pass.
Stefan = the brooding diarist with hero hair (Paul Wesley). Damon = the smirk in the leather jacket (Ian Somerhalder). They swap moral high ground at least once a season; the diary tells you whose show it is.
Same actress, same face, one tell: Elena wears her hair straight and means well; Katherine wears curls and means something. If she just did something cruel while smiling — that was Katherine.
Grayson & Miranda: the parents, gone before episode one. Jenna: Miranda’s kid sister, promoted to guardian — and Klaus’s cruelest kill. John: Grayson’s brother, the town’s least charming vampire-hater — and secretly Elena’s father.
Raised as siblings, actually first cousins: Elena is John and Isobel’s daughter, adopted by Grayson and Miranda at birth. The show hides it until Season 2 — then hands Jeremy a hunter’s mark on top.
Both Originals, both Mikaelsons. Klaus: dimples, menace, part werewolf. Elijah: the immaculate suit and the doomed sense of honor. Rule of thumb — Elijah gives his word, Klaus gives ultimatums.
His wife Isobel vanished (she asked Damon to turn her); he dated Jenna, who Klaus took; he proposed to Jo, who didn’t survive her own wedding. The history teacher endures more history than anyone in town.
Vicki first (S1), Caroline in S2 — and she’s better at being a vampire than anyone — Elena in the S3 finale, later cured human again. Matt alone stays human for all eight seasons; it becomes his entire personality, then his badge.

Vampire with a velvet accent — Damon’s cell-mate from the Augustine lab (S5), and later the love of Bonnie’s life †.

Klaus and Elijah’s little sister — a thousand-year-old Original with a cheer-squad phase and a soft spot for Matt. Leaves with the family for New Orleans.

Jo’s twin brother and the Gemini coven’s nightmare — crashes the wedding with a massacre (S6) and writes the spell that ties Elena’s sleep to Bonnie’s life.

Matt’s reckless big sister, dating Tyler and Jeremy in the pilot — and the show’s first proof that a familiar face won’t save you: turned, then staked, inside Season 1 †.
Chart reflects all eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries (2009–2017), through the series finale — daggers and dashed reveals spoil to there. Portraits are stills from the Vampire Diaries wiki, cropped and served from this site so nothing hotlinks. Josie and Lizzie appear here as the children seen on the show; their grown-up years belong to Legacies. Klaus, Elijah and the rest of the first family get their own chart on the companion page for The Originals.
