Wisteria Lane looks orderly until you try to remember whose kid is secretly whose. Every season of this show runs on one household hiding something from the other four. These are the ones that scramble the family tree.

The pilot's engine

Mary Alice's secret

In the very first scene, perfect neighbor Mary Alice Young shoots herself — then keeps narrating the show from beyond. Why? Years ago she bought a baby, Dana, from a junkie named Deirdre, renamed him Zach, and moved to Wisteria Lane. When Deirdre came back for her son, Mary Alice killed her and buried the toy chest under the pool. A blackmail note — “I know what you did” — did the rest.

Season 7

The baby swap

The hospital switched Gaby's newborn with the Sanchezes'. So Juanita, raised a Solis, isn't one by blood — and Grace, the daughter Gaby meets in Season 7, is. Gaby barely gets to know her before Grace's parents flee an immigration raid and take her along. Little Celia, for the record, is a genuine Solis.

Season 4

Katherine's Dylan

Katherine Mayfair returns to the lane with a teenage daughter who remembers nothing of her childhood there. Because she didn't live it: the real Dylan died as a child in an accident Katherine covered up, and the girl on the lane is a lookalike orphan Katherine adopted and never told.

Seasons 3–4

Bree's pillow pregnancy

When 17-year-old Danielle got pregnant by Edie's nephew, Bree strapped on a prosthetic bump, faked a pregnancy, and raised baby Benjamin as her own son — until Danielle came back for him. On this chart he gets a solid line from Danielle and a dashed red one from his “mother.”

The marriage scorecard

Keep score: Susan divorced Karl, then married Mike twice — divorced in the five-year jump, remarried in the S5 finale. Gaby and Carlos also divorced and remarried each other. Bree buried Rex, divorced Orson, and married Trip Weston in the finale. Only Tom and Lynette wobble to the brink and stay married.

The device

Why the narrator is dead

Every episode is narrated by Brenda Strong as the late Mary Alice — the one neighbor who can finally see everything the lane hides. Her suicide opens the series; her ghost's welcome to the newest resident closes it, eight seasons later, with the reveal that the new neighbor has a secret too.

People you'll mix up

The lane recycles names, swaps babies, and keeps two of everything. One line each.

Zach vs. Dana

Same kid. Born Dana to Deirdre; bought and renamed Zach by Paul and Mary Alice. “Dana” is the name on the blackmail trail.

Juanita vs. Juanita

Juanita Solis is Gaby's daughter. Juanita “Mama” Solis was Carlos's mother — the one Andrew hit with his car in Season 1.

Juanita vs. Grace

Switched at birth. Juanita was raised Solis but isn't one by blood; Grace is Gaby's biological daughter, raised by the Sanchezes.

The Scavo five

Twins Preston and Porter, then Parker, Penny, and late-arrival Paige. Stepdaughter Kayla is Tom's with Nora — the sixth kid the show sends away.

Julie vs. Danielle

The lane's two daughters: Julie is Susan's sensible one (strangled in S6, survives); Danielle is Bree's rebellious one (the teen mom).

Mike vs. Karl vs. Orson

All tangled with two women: Mike is Susan's plumber husband; Karl her lawyer ex, who died dating Bree; Orson is Bree's dentist husband — who once ran Mike over.

Dylan vs. Dylan

The real Dylan died as a little girl in Chicago. The Dylan on the lane is the adopted stand-in who doesn't know it.

Mrs. Huber vs. Mrs. McCluskey

The two older neighbors: Martha Huber was the blackmailer (Paul strangled her); Karen McCluskey is the babysitter-in-chief who outlives almost everyone.

Realtor, man-eater, Susan's rival. Married the serial-killer neighbor Dave, fled the house, and was electrocuted in Season 5.

Cranky neighbor, emergency babysitter, keeper of a freezer with her late husband in it. Takes the lane's last secret to her grave in the finale.

Sent the note that made Mary Alice pull the trigger. Paul found out and strangled her with a blender cord in Season 1.

Spent seven seasons destroying Paul Young — including cutting off two of her own fingers to frame him for her “murder.”

The teenage lawn boy whose affair with Gaby nearly ended the Solis marriage before Season 1 was out. Returns in S6 owning a restaurant.
